Kast in his campaign promised to fight crime, which seems to be a major scourge for Chileans.
In several surveys, more than 60 percent of Chileans feel that security is the main issue facing the South American country. In fact, this issue is considered more important than economic, health and education problems.
“This country is falling apart,” Kast said during his campaign, as reported by AFP.
Chile has been shaken in recent years by the Covid-19 pandemic, violent demonstrations and the rise of criminal gangs.
Most Chileans are fed up with high crime rates and slow economic growth during the country’s four years of left-wing rule.
Kast is like a breath of fresh air with his promises to eradicate crime from its roots.
Ursula Villalobos, a 44-year-old housewife from Santiago, said she was willing to accept change if it brought security.
“What’s important is that people can leave the house without fear and go home at night without worrying that something will happen to them on street corners,” Villalobos said.
However, there are also doubts that arise among some citizens considering that Kast is also quite tough on several issues, such as promising to deport hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, opposing abortion without exceptions, and supporting dictator Augusto Pinochet.
His stance on these matters sparked fears that he would lead Chile into the dark days of a dictatorship that has already claimed the lives of more than 3,000 Chileans.
“I’m afraid because I think we will experience a lot of oppression,” said Cecilia Mora, a 71-year-old retiree.
“Candidates from the right wing really remind me of dictatorships. I have experienced dictatorships. I was young at the time, I experienced it and suffered because of it,” he continued.
For an elderly person like Mora, he did not dare take the risk of voting for a right-wing candidate who openly expressed support for Pinochet.According to him, Kast was the same as Pinochet. The difference is, he just doesn’t wear a uniform.
Pinochet left power in 1990 after the Chilean people rejected an attempt to extend his rule for 17 years through a referendum.
Apart from Pinochet, some residents were also worried about the Kast family background.Based on media investigations, Kast’s father was a member of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party and a soldier during World War II.
Even so, Kast has previously emphasized that his father was only a forced military conscript and did not support the Nazis.
