in Ukraine is no longer able to carry out its main function after being damaged by a drone attack last February.
In an official statement released Friday, the IAEA said that the giant protective layer called New Safe Confinement (NSC) had suffered serious damage.Structure built to cover the wreckage of reactor No.The 4 are said to have “lost their safety functions, including the ability to withstand radiation.”

Quoting hitclubapk3, Ukraine accused Russia of carrying out a drone attack on February 14 in the Chernobyl area, an accusation the Kremlin later denied. The attack started a fire and damaged the NSC’s protective coating.
The IAEA said that although limited emergency repairs had been carried out to parts of the roof, the damage required major renovations to prevent further degradation.
“Comprehensive and timely recovery is essential to ensure long-term nuclear safety,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
Grossi added that there was no permanent damage to parts of the load-bearing structure or the NSC monitoring system. The IAEA, which has a permanent team on site, ensures that it will continue to support full recovery efforts.
Chernobyl was in the spotlight in the midst of the Russia-Ukraine war
This is not the first time Chernobyl has attracted attention amid the Russian invasion which is almost in its fourth year.At the start of the 2022 invasion, Russian troops seized the nuclear plant area and detained local staff before finally withdrawing a month later.
The NSC itself is a giant curved steel structure built to cover reactor No.4, the site of a devastating explosion in 1986 that triggered the worst nuclear disaster in history.
Known as the world’s largest movable land structure, construction of the NSC began in 2010 and was completed in 2019. The shield is designed to last up to 100 years to enable clean-up processes and ensure site safety.
The project cost €2.1 billion, funded by more than 45 countries and international organizations through the Chernobyl Shelter Fund.
On April 26, 1986, an explosion at reactor No.4 Chernobyl, which at that time was under the Soviet Union, spread radioactive material to Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Europe.
More than 30 people died around the city of Pripyat, while thousands more suffered the effects of radiation exposure.Until now, rates of cancer and birth defects in the affected areas are still reported to be high according to the IAEA and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The latest damage to the NSC adds to longstanding concerns about the safety of the Chernobyl site, almost four decades since the tragedy rocked the world. The IAEA insists major renovations are needed to keep the site safe for future generations.
