Gibran emphasized the importance of dialogue, inclusive communication and collaboration between youth organizations to strengthen social unity and stability.
“Interfaith youth must help establish effective dialogue and consolidate nationality in maintaining unity and harmony, because the key to development is there,” said the General Chair of the Catholic Youth PP, Stefanus Gusma, conveying Gibran’s message, quoted from a written statement.
Gibran also encouraged Catholic Youth to strengthen coordination with the government and strategic institutions, including the newly formed Papua Development Acceleration Executive Committee.
“We were immediately responded to so that we could directly communicate and have an audience with the Executive Committee for the Acceleration of Development in Papua which was just formed this month. We will be connected directly so that it fits immediately,” he said.
Stefanus also said that Catholic Youth had formed the Papua Task Force, a special structure that focuses on empowering, educating and developing the capacity of the Papuan people.
The program was designed in line with the government’s priorities for inclusive development and based on community participation.
“Because Mr. Vice President is the Chair of the Steering Committee and he welcomed it very extraordinarily, he will bring these issues up in discussions with Mr. President of course and of course also with committees such as accelerating development in Papua,” he said.
During the meeting, Chair of the PP Catholic Youth Papua Task Force, Melkior Sitokdana, explained the results of the Catholic Youth National Leadership Meeting (Rapimnas) related to issues in Papua.
Melkior said the voices and aspirations of the Papuan people must be the main consideration in planning and implementing development.
“We convey that many PSNs in Papua are still facing obstacles, both in terms of transparency, land acquisition and social impacts. Indigenous communities need to be involved from the start so that there is no longer any injustice in managing customary land,” said Melkior in a separate statement.
He also highlighted aspects of education and health that are still lagging behind in many regions.
“Rapimnas recommends accelerating improvements in the quality of education and equal distribution of health workers, especially in rural areas,” he said.
