Literacy
is a basic ability that is the foundation of a nation’s progress. These basic abilities include the ability to read, write, as well as understand the meaning behind
data
and information.
However, the literacy situation of Indonesian society is still a big chore.Based on the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) report, Indonesia is still lagging behind many other countries in terms of the ability to read and understand both complex and simple information (GoodStats, 2024).
This situation is increasingly challenging amidst uncertain global economic conditions due to war, price fluctuations, competition for energy sources, and climate change.

At the national level, society is also faced with an economic “change”, namely very rapid changes in consumption patterns, investment and job creation.
As a result, public spaces are increasingly filled with confusing information and flooded with opinions from all corners.
As a result, data mixed with opinion and fact is often unable to compete with more interesting and popular narratives on social media.
As a result, people have difficulty distinguishing between data-based information and are susceptible to accepting misinformation. This condition not only triggers confusion, but also fosters pessimism and dissatisfaction with the government’s performance.
2026 Economic Census: More Than Just Data Collection
In 2026, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) will carry out the Economic Census (SE2026).This activity is a routine activity carried out once every ten years to photograph all economic activities in Indonesia.
The Economic Census will cover 18 categories of business fields, ranging from processing industry to other services.
Through SE2026, BPS will produce comprehensive data regarding the structure and scale of the national economy, profiles of micro, small, medium and large businesses, as well as the distribution of economic activities in each region. This data can be a foundation for the government in designing economic development policies, as well as helping business actors identify future business opportunities and challenges.
However, SE2026 is not just a technical activity in the field of statistics. This activity is a very strategic means of public education. When society understands why data is collected and how data is used, society “will” learn to recognize the importance of data as a decision-making tool.In other words, SE2026 can be seen as an entry point for building data literacy in society.
Community Participation: The Key to Building Literacy
In participatory development theory, the success of a program is not only measured by the final results, but also by the extent to which the community is actively involved in the implementation process.
Community participation means providing space for residents to become subjects, not just objects of development involved from planning, implementation, to evaluation.
The same applies to SE2026.Community participation in socializing the Economic Census program, as well as the willingness of economic actors to provide correct, complete and honest data is a real manifestation of data literacy awareness.Every economic actor who is willing to participate actively is actually helping to build an accurate portrait of the national economy.
Furthermore, this participation will foster a new culture, a data-based culture.People will get used to checking, understanding, comprehending first before utilizing existing data before making decisions in various contexts such as choices, policies, and things commonly encountered in everyday life.
The 2026 Economic Census is an important momentum to raise collective awareness that data is not just numbers on paper, but is a reflection of our real, everyday lives.
Through the 2026 Economic Census, people will learn to appreciate data, understand its function, and use it as a basis for thinking and acting. In the midst of a rapid and often misleading flow of information, participation in statistical activities will be a new form of increasing data literacy in society.
