At a global conference in Seoul last September, Bong Joon-ho said that this technology had come as a big surprise to the film industry.
“Filmmakers are constantly talking about AI while they eat, drink coffee, and even when they go home,” he said.
“As AI shakes up everything we believed and admired about video, we feel both fear and excitement.”
The director then elaborated on the use of this technology in the film Mickey 17. In this film, Robert Pattinson as the main actor plays several Mickey characters.
In several scenes, two Mickey characters even interact with each other simultaneously. He admitted that he received AI assistance in visualizing the scene.
“There is a scene in the film Mickey 17 where two Mickeys, meaning two Robert Pattinsons, appear on one screen,” said Bong Joon-ho.
“Ironically, we actually received AI assistance for the visual effects of the scene. This is a case where AI was used for the visuals,” he admitted.
“The reality is that we use AI technology as a tool, even in films that tell the story of how humanity is threatened by technological progress, while uniquely human warmth and imperfections remain.”
Bong Joon-ho and other judges, such as director Celine Song and actress Jenna Ortega, agreed that creative work is a human process that cannot be reduced to an algorithm.
They added that AI may take over the human experience, but people will eventually get bored with AI content, which will make viewers appreciate human-generated content.
