Governor of North Sumatra
Bobby Nasution
responding to calls from a number of parties for natural disasters to hit the region
Sumatra
declared a national disaster emergency.
According to Bobby, assistance from the central government has been provided optimally since the start of the incident, so determining national disaster status is not yet an urgent need.
Bobby emphasized that since the first days of the disaster, support from the central government has been felt in the field. He gave the example of the Indonesian Air Force’s involvement in providing helicopters to open access to affected areas.

“In my opinion, the Central Government has provided its strength from the very beginning. My question is, for example, do we have helicopters in North Sumatra? There aren’t any. We can come there, we can open access there because there is helicopter assistance from the Indonesian Air Force. Where does that come from? From the center,” he said, Monday (15/12).
Apart from that, Bobby added, the construction of emergency bridges at a number of points, including in the Belawan and Central Tapanuli areas, also received material support from the Central Government.Logistical assistance such as food, fuel and LPG supplies were distributed from the start of the disaster
“After that, the Deli bridge that was built today is here, but the stock is small. It was assisted by the Central Government. Food assistance and other logistics at the beginning, if we collect it, it is available, but also assistance from the Central Government. Then assistance with fuel and other things,” he explained.
Bobby explained that the main route from Medan to Central Tapanuli was cut off, meaning aid distribution had to be diverted via Sibolga. However, aid can still reach the affected areas.
“We know that entry access, such as from Medan to Tapteng, is cut off. The assistance from the Central Government comes from Sibolga. The route should be, maybe the route will be accelerated next month so

now.To help LPG, PLN is also the same.I think the powers that have been given by the state today are very helpful.Very, very helpful,” he said.
Bobby also responded to the notion that the determination of national disaster status would speed up the development of permanent infrastructure.According to him, this status does not necessarily make the emergency bridge permanent, especially with extreme weather conditions.
“For example, in Central Tapanuli, we have built a bridge. Is it true that if we use a national disaster the bridge can immediately become a permanent bridge? Not really. It’s the same as the Deli bridge too. Suddenly the rain goes up and it disappears again. Is it true that if we use a national disaster the working time will be shortened? Same, there might be more personnel. But the technology we are using today is the Deli bridge. If for example it rains again, don’t blame the weather, but you can see the reality in the field is that the bridge will disappear again,” he said.
Bobby added that the central government had also sent seven additional units of heavy equipment to Central Tapanuli to open access to areas that were still isolated. He emphasized that the term isolated does not mean that it cannot be reached at all, but rather that it cannot be passed by vehicles.
“Yesterday, seven additional pieces of heavy equipment were sent to Tapteng from the center, focused on Tapteng, because there live isolated areas, isolated language is not completely inaccessible, yes, but it cannot be accessed by vehicles, the others can,” he said.
Therefore, the most important thing right now, he added, is to ensure that access and needs of affected communities are met, regardless of the declared disaster status.
“In terms of assistance, it can be said to be the same as national disaster assistance, but the status is still at the provincial level. I think the assistance is extraordinary,” he concluded.
