Joko Anwar revealed the reasons for choosing the work of a micro painter to appear in the film he wrote,
The Dark Legend of Malin Kundang
, with Aline Djayasukmana and Rafki Hidayat.
Micro painters are artists who specialize in small-scale paintings.According to Joko, he and Aline and Rafki deliberately chose it because it was the core of the film’s storyline.

“We really like to showcase professions that are rarely given the spotlight in society,” said Joko Anwar in Jakarta, Monday (17/11).
“This character is of course the result of discussions between me, Aline, Rafki and Kevin, who also took part during the development of the story. But if you guys saw that there is a painter’s profession, not an ordinary painter, but this is a micro painter,” he said.
“He’s a painter, yes, but this time he’s a micro painter, a small painter. Why a small painter? Friends, you’ve seen (the film), which means there’s something hidden,” explained Joko Anwar.
“So sometimes we see people express themselves not to describe their mood but also to try to reach out to tell what happened to them,” he continued.
Rio Dewanto, who plays the main character named Alif in the film, also shared his experience of studying a character with a unique profession.He considered that playing the character Alif was not too difficult because of discussions with two young directors.
“Just research first when reading the scenario, then chat with Rafki and Harjo, ‘Oh, eh, Alif is a micro painter’. Then just study the medium using anything other than stone, it turns out there are also those who use rice,” explained Rio.
“But what’s really interesting is that the painter’s profession is not just cool in the story, but it really becomes part of the journey of the story itself, and why does he have to keep his past in the painting and then in the end it is revealed like what you saw earlier,” he continued.
The Dark Legend of Malin Kundang centers on Alif (Rio Dewanto), a painter who is internationally known for his micro painting works.Alif’s life was shaken after he had an accident which caused him to lose his memory regarding his past and his mother.

When Alif begins to live his life, he is visited by an old woman who claims to be his biological mother.Alif’s condition of amnesia makes it difficult for him to recognize and remember his mother’s face.
Alif is a micro painter who paints using stone as a medium.He had a childhood trauma that made him pour out all his trauma and secrets in the form of images on small stones.
The Legend of Malin Kundang also stars Faradina Mufti as Nadine, Alif’s wife.Apart from that, this film also stars Vonny Anggraini, Jordan Omar, Nova Eliza, Gambit Saifullah, and Tony Merle.This film is the directorial debut of two young directors, Rafki Hidayat and Kevin Rahardjo.
The Dark Legend of Malin Kundang will be shown in cinemas starting November 27.
