Messi’s emotional visit to Camp Nou a few days ago sparked speculation about the legend’s return to Barca.
Messi previously spent 21 years at the club, scoring 709 goals in 837 matches, as well as winning a string of titles including 10 La Liga titles, 4 Champions Leagues and 3 Club World Cups.
Speaking at a book launch event in Barcelona, Laporta confirmed that the club’s board had discussed plans to build a statue of Messi.
“Then being linked to Barca, he knows the door is open for him. We respect him a lot, he deserves the best respect,” said Laporta quoted from
TNT Sports
.
“He should have a statue at Spotify Camp Nou, like [Johan] Cruyff and [Laszlo] Kubala. He is one of the iconic players who has left a mark on us. We have discussed it in meetings and are working on it. The family has to agree, and all Barca fans definitely want it,” Laporta added.
The Camp Nou Stadium, which has been closed for almost 900 days, has now reopened with its first training session attended by more than 20 thousand fans.
Messi himself left Barcelona in August 2021 to join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).His farewell took place in an emotional press conference.
Messi is currently under contract with Inter Miami until the end of the 2028 MLS season, after signing an extension last October.
Laporta emphasized that although Messi deserves respect, talking about his return as a player is unrealistic.
“For me, making speculations that are unrealistic, and in my opinion also unfair, I believe is inappropriate,” he told Radio Catalunya.
“It would be very fitting if he received the best honor in the world, and it would be extraordinary if that honor was given here, in front of 105,000 fans,” said Laporta.
