He said that there had indeed been an application for a Special Mining Business Permit (WIUPK) for the management of the Wabu Block gold mine.The submission was made by the former Governor of Papua, the late Lukas Enembe.
At that time, Bahlil was not yet Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.He said that until now this request had not been responded to by issuing a permit.
“When I was not yet Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM, I had already submitted my WIUPK, but not yet the IUPK,” he said.
Bahlil said that a number of Central Papua DPRP members had visited him to ask what permits had been issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to manage the Wabu Block gold mine.
After the meeting, Bahlil admitted that he was surprised why the DPRP asked him, not the regional government.
The Wabu Block Mine in Intan Jaya Regency is a former PT Freeport Indonesia concession area which was returned to the government.This area has very large gold mineral reserves and has the potential to be managed by PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) through MIND ID.
However, the management of this block received strong opposition from local community groups.A number of organizations, such as Amnesty International Indonesia, also expressed their rejection.
They argue that there is a potential negative impact on the community around the Wabu Block, such as eviction, conflict and human rights violations.
