, social media that must apply age limits to children include Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Kick, Reddit, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitch, X (Twitter), and YouTube.
Under the law, platforms that do not implement it will be subject to sanctions of up to 50 million Australian dollars (around IDR 554 billion).
In a speech delivered via video, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said children should make the most of their free time by socializing instead of being glued to their cellphones.
“Start a new sport, learn a new musical instrument, or read a book that’s been sitting on your shelf for a long time,” says Albanese.
“The important thing is to spend quality time with your friends and family in person,” he continued.
Albanese has long been concerned about mental health problems in children caused by excessive exposure to cell phones. He agrees that this policy will not run smoothly, but it is still worth trying, in order to improve the quality of the future of the younger generation.

, Australian Communications Minister Anika Wells said social media companies will be required to report the number of accounts of minors on their platforms before and after the ban takes effect. This report is then valid every six months.
Determining and enforcing age limits is left to each platform. Some use facial feature analysis, others review users’ uploads and friendship networks.
Underage users may be able to open their accounts again once they reach 16 years of age. However, this is still a presumption and depends on the relevant social media policies.
This ban on social media for children in Australia is the first in history. The European Union is currently considering similar steps, and Malaysia will even follow suit starting January 1.
Despite its positive aims, a number of critics believe this ban violates teenagers’ rights to communicate politically.
Critics also highlight that the law could disproportionately affect youth living in remote areas, as well as impact access to information for those who are minorities or have disabilities.
