Sunday (21/12), the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this special meeting was held based on the decision of the Prime Ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand on 11 December 2025.

The special meeting will be chaired by Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan.
The meeting will provide a platform for ASEAN Foreign Ministers to exchange views on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand.
Apart from that, it is also to consider steps that ASEAN can take to support ongoing efforts towards de-escalation and cessation of hostilities in the interests of peace and stability between the two ASEAN member countries, as well as the wider region.
“The holding of this special meeting reflects the commitment of ASEAN member countries to ASEAN unity and solidarity, as well as ASEAN’s centrality in maintaining peace, security, stability and prosperity in the region, in accordance with the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (

As the current Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia stated that it remains strongly committed to advancing constructive dialogue.
Malaysia also expressed its commitment to facilitate the two countries to continue to uphold the principles of international law, good neighborly relations and peaceful coexistence, as well as bilateral and multilateral cooperation in efforts to achieve peaceful, fair and sustainable dispute resolution.
Based on information gathered, the Malaysian authorities limited journalists’ access to coverage of the meeting due to the sensitivity of the issues discussed.
For the time being, the Malaysian authorities are only allowing official media belonging to the Malaysian government to carry out coverage, to ensure there is visual and factual reporting regarding the meeting.
