The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) is intensifying efforts to evacuate residents in Lumajang Regency, East Java, as an anticipatory measure against the potential danger of subsequent eruptions

Basarnas Deputy for Operations and Preparedness, Edy Prakoso, in Jakarta, Wednesday evening, stated that personnel had been dispatched to strengthen the evacuation of residents in areas prone to exposure to Semeru volcanic material.
“We have dispatched personnel from the Jember SAR Post to help evacuate residents because there are also some residents who have carried out independent evacuations,” said Edy, as reported by Antara, Wednesday (19/11).

The evacuation operation was carried out with a joint team consisting of BNPB, BPBD, TNI/Polri, and Basarnas Pos SAR Jember.Joint officers were stationed at a number of points to ensure the evacuation process was safe and orderly, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children, as well as residents who live near the river that originates in Semeru.
Based on reports from the BNPB Operations Control Center, at least 300 residents have been evacuated to several prepared evacuation locations, including the Oro-oro Ombo Village Hall, Penanggal Village Hall, and the Supiturang 2 Elementary School building in Pronojiwo District, Lumajang.
Apart from evacuation, Basarnas personnel were also deployed to be on standby to monitor river flows. This is done to anticipate the potential for cold lava floods that could occur when it rains.
Edy considers this monitoring important considering that volcanic material that accumulates on slopes can be carried to settlements and main access routes if heavy rainfall occurs.
“Tonight the team also carried out anticipatory monitoring in the event of rain which could result in cold lava floods,” said Edy, while ensuring that monitoring and securing evacuation routes continued to be carried out together with ministries/technical institutions, regional governments and local volunteers.
