The Ministry of Health said cases of diarrhea, fever and myalgia had increased sharply. The causes are simple but fatal, namely that the residence is not clean, water sources are polluted, and health facilities have collapsed.
At the only hospital in Aceh Tamiang, conditions were described as being like a disaster zone.Medical equipment was submerged in mud, syringes were scattered on the floor, and medicines were washed away by the floodwaters.
Medical personnel worked non-stop, fighting to save whoever could be saved.
“These workers are tireless,” said Ayu Wahyuni Putri, who had just given birth a few days before the flood hit.
Hospitals are almost paralyzed
Nurhayati, a 42-year-old nurse, said the hospital was barely functioning due to a lack of medicine. The medical team tried to save the ventilator in the baby’s intensive care unit, but failed when the water rose and drowned him.
One baby died, while six others were rescued.
“People know me as a nurse. When I couldn’t do anything, it felt very devastating,” she said.”This is an extraordinary disaster. Everything is destroyed.”
Damage to the bridge makes access to the affected areas increasingly difficult.Doctor Chik M. Iqbal had to travel by boat to reach Aceh Tamiang.
He said the emergency room would only be able to operate again on Monday. The Ministry of Health reported that 31 hospitals and 156 health centers were affected in the three provinces. This condition slows down patient treatment and distribution of medical assistance.
President Prabowo Subianto visited Aceh on Sunday and ordered the acceleration of bridge and dam repairs. He also asked for the cancellation of government microloans for affected farmers.
Meanwhile, regional officials in Sumatra are urging the central government to declare a national emergency status to open up access to additional funding for rescue and recovery operations.
