Otsuki was scheduled to appear for two days starting Friday (28/11) at the Bandai Namco Festival 2025. However, management announced via the official website on Saturday (29/11) that he had to stop his appearance suddenly.
“(Otsuki) suddenly stopped appearing due to unavoidable circumstances,” said a management statement, as reported
Japan Today
on Sunday (30/11).
They added that Otsuki’s appearance the following day, Saturday (29/11), was also canceled for the same reason.
This cancellation occurred amid increasing tensions between the Japanese and Chinese governments, following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s statement in parliament regarding Taiwan.
On social media, a video circulated showing Otsuki singing on stage before the lights suddenly went out and the music stopped. Two people suspected of being staff then approached and escorted Otsuki off the stage.
Bandai Namco Festival 2025 is supposed to last until Sunday (30/11).However, the organizers made a new announcement. They said the event had to be canceled after “thorough consideration of various factors.”
The Japanese idol group, Momoiro Clover Z, which was supposed to appear at the same event, was also affected by the cancellation.
A number of other artists and performances also previously canceled activities in China. These include pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki, jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara, and the musical Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.
Journalist Soichiro Matsutani, an observer of Asian pop culture, believes that this condition has emerged at an unfortunate time, because the Japanese government is aggressively promoting video games, anime and other entertainment content overseas.
“The situation surrounding Japan’s entertainment business could become increasingly difficult,” Matsutani said.
He recalled tensions about a decade ago between China and South Korea regarding the deployment of a missile defense system that made Beijing limit the broadcast of Korean dramas.
