“The enemy is trying to target the leadership, sometimes through assassination attempts and through hostile attacks which now may even be carried out from within the country,” said Khatib, as quoted by Iran International.
Khatib did not specify what the targeting efforts would look like. However, senior Iranian officials have also voiced similar concerns.
Iran’s current supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, rarely appears in public.
The last appearance occurred on Saturday (5/7) since the end of the war with Israel to participate in the Ashura ceremony in Tehran.
Ashura is a solemn ceremony to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in the view of the Shia community.
Iran’s supreme leader must be a cleric
In Iran, the supreme leader is not the president who is currently led by Masoud Pezeshkian. But a great cleric, Ayatollah, has power over all branches of power, both executive and legislative.
This leadership is also called the Faqih Region or Velayat-e Faqih, which refers to ability and authority in Islamic religious and constitutional matters.
Therefore, the leadership of this government must be held by someone who understands Islamic law and sciences, and has the character of piety and justice.
The parstoday site writes that a figure like this is called Wali Faqih. This leadership concept refers to the Shiite Islamic beliefs held by the majority of Iranians. This concept came into effect in 1979 or after the Iranian Islamic revolution which appointed Imam Khomeini as the first supreme leader. The supreme leader will serve until the priest dies.
In the book Tahrir al-Wasilah, Khomeini wrote, “During the period of Imam Zaman’s invisibility and absence, his general representatives – the faqihs who were qualified to issue fatwas and legal decisions – were Imam Zaman’s substitutes in managing political and government affairs and other matters that were the responsibility of Imam Zaman.”
The authority and power of a Regional Faqih is indeed great, such as appointing the head of the military, head of the judiciary and security agencies. This authority also includes appointing 6 of the 12 members of the Constitutional Guardian Council.
The Faqih region can even monitor and veto the policies of the President and Parliament, including impeaching the President.
It is not surprising that in many state crises, the role of the highest leader in Iran is always highlighted. This is because the supreme leader is not the president but an ayatollah who is an Islamic religious expert.
