Minister of Agriculture (Mentan)
Andi Amran Sulaiman
reveal the motive behind the actions of the person who put in 250 tonnes
rice
illegal import
from Thailand via Sabang, Aceh.
He said this effort was made because he was pursuing profits from falling foreign rice prices and taking advantage of loopholes in the rules of the free trade area in Sabang.
“It’s in the Sabang area. There are regulations in one of the regulations, the article is Free Trade Zone. Well, but you have to pay attention that it doesn’t conflict with central policy,” said Amran at the Parliament Complex, Central Jakarta, Monday (24/11).

Amran emphasized that nationally Indonesia is not opening the tap for imports because domestic rice stocks are sufficient.
“Our target was 32 million tons. But the result was 34.7 million tons. That’s above the target. What does it mean if it’s 250 tons? That’s just politically disturbing,” he said.
He asked that policy practices that were detrimental to food security like the past not be repeated.
“Don’t, (practice)
greednomics
repeated,” he said.
Amran explained that the decline in international rice prices was the main trigger for individuals trying to import illegal rice.
“Yes, the aim is to make a profit. Because overseas prices are falling. Previously it was US$650 per ton. Now it is US$340 per ton. Almost half,” he said.
The price decline occurred after Indonesia stopped imports in the last two years, even though previously Indonesia’s imports reached 7 million tons, so other countries tried to lobby for Indonesia to buy again.
“But our determination is self-sufficiency,” he added.
He assessed that the 250 ton volume had no impact on national supply. However, this action must still be dealt with firmly because it has the potential to disrupt stability and open up opportunities for deviation.
“If it’s 250 tons, it doesn’t mean anything. It’s really small. It’s just annoying. Meanwhile, even 1 liter isn’t allowed to enter Indonesia,” he said.
The government previously sealed the PT Multazam Sabang Group warehouse after receiving reports that 250 tonnes of rice had entered Sabang without central approval.
The report was received on Sunday (23/11) afternoon and Amran immediately coordinated with the Regional Police Chief, Kabareskrim, and Pangdam to stop activities at the location and ensure that the rice did not leave the warehouse. The government also ordered an investigation to trace all parties involved.
The Ministry of Agriculture suspects that the import was planned because the export permit from Thailand was known to have been issued before the cross-ministerial meeting took place in Jakarta on November 14.
Apart from Sabang, allegations of illegal rice imports in Batam are also being verified.
The government emphasized that it would crack down on all forms of illegal import of rice. In accordance with Prabowo’s direction, no imported rice is allowed to enter as long as domestic stocks are sufficient.
