Madagascar
recently shocked by the discovery of the first stone
emerald
weighing 300 kg at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday (19/11) evening local time.
The large, dark stone with sparkling green crystal lines is displayed at the Ambohitsorohitra State Palace in the capital Antananarivo.
According to the interim President of Madagascar, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the stone will later be sold and the proceeds from the sale will be channeled to the state treasury.

“This stone will probably be removed, and the minister will later explain the procedures for increasing state income,” he said and promised complete transparency.
Gemological Institute of America (
GIA
), as the most authoritative gemological institution in the world, explains one carat is equivalent to 0.20 grams.
The 300 kg weight is the weight of the chunks that have not gone through the cutting and cleaning process.
This cutting process usually results in a decrease in weight, depending on the quality of the material and the degree of damage to the stone.
From a stone weighing 300 kg, around 150 kg remains after cleaning.
So if calculated, the pure weight of an emerald weighs 150 kg or the equivalent of 750,000 carats.
According to Diamond n Co, the price of emeralds per carat on the market is adjusted to the type and quality of the class of stone.
Low quality emeralds are estimated to be worth IDR 3.1 million per stone.Meanwhile, high quality stones range from IDR 141.5 million per stone.
If the price of low quality emeralds is calculated at IDR 3.1 million per carat, the weight of 150 kg of pure emerald is estimated to reach IDR 2.325 trillion.
This calculation is based on the standard of one carat being equal to 0.2 grams, according to the GIA.
