Tom Cruise
received his first Oscar.Tom Cruise received this trophy as an Academy Honorary Award.
This honorary award was given to Cruise at the Governors Awards event on Sunday (16/11) which was held behind closed doors in Los Angeles, United States.

As reported by Variety on Sunday (16/11), the trophy was handed over to Tom Cruise by director Alejandro G Inarritu, director of Cruise’s film which will be released in October 2026.
Receiving the trophy, Cruise couldn’t hold back his emotion in his speech.Cruise first received an Oscar nomination in 1990 in the Best Actor category, and was nominated again in 1997, 2000 and 2023, but he won none of those nominations.
“Movies take me around the world,” Cruise said.”The film helped me appreciate and respect differences. It also showed me how human we all are, how similar we are in many ways.”
“And wherever we come from, in that film, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that’s the power of this art form. And that’s why it matters, that’s why it matters to me. So, making films is not just my job, it’s who I am.”
On this occasion, Cruise also said that he first fell in love with films when he was a child.The moment he saw the projector light on the screen and display the moving image became a magical memory in his mind.
“Suddenly, the world felt much wider than I had known. And whole cultures, lives and landscapes spread out before me, and it triggered something in me,” said Tom Cruise as reported

“It sparked a thirst for adventure, a thirst for knowledge, a thirst to understand humans, to create characters, to tell stories, to see the world. It opened my eyes,” he continued.
“It opened my imagination to the possibility that life could expand far beyond the limits I felt in my own life at that time,” said Tom Cruise.
“And that beam of light opened up a desire to open up the world, and I have followed it ever since.”
The Governors Awards are annual awards held by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).This event is usually held before the announcement of the Oscar nominations.

The event contained three awards honoring lifetime achievements in the film industry, namely the Academy Honorary Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
The 16th Governors Awards held this year awarded trophies to four people, Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, and Wynn Thomas received the Academy Honorary Award.Then Dolly Parton received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
Meanwhile, the short list of candidates for nominations for the 98th Academy Awards or the 2026 Oscars will be announced on December 16 2025. Nominations for the 2026 Oscars will be announced on January 22 2026.
The peak night of the 2026 Oscars will be held on March 15 2026.
