The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources records reserves
petroleum
and Indonesian condensate reached 4.42 billion barrels and
gas
reaching 55.85 trillion cubic feet (TCF) in January 2025.
Director General of Oil and Gas (Migas) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Laode Sulaeman, said that most of the oil and condensate reserves are on the islands of Kalimantan and Papua.
“Petroleum and condenser reserves are large in various regions of Indonesia, including Kalimantan Island which has total reserves of 573.82 MMSTB, while Papua Island or Papua contributes a total of 109.45 MMSTB of reserves,” said Laode at the DPR RI Commission XII Working Meeting, Thursday (13/11).

According to Laode, the large oil and gas reserves indicate that there are still very broad development opportunities to optimize domestic production, especially from the eastern region of Indonesia.
“The distribution of these reserves shows that there are still development opportunities in these areas, both through forest exploration activities and optimizing production from fields that are already producing,” he explained.
In detail, the highest oil reserves are in the central Sumatra region, namely 1.32 billion barrels.Then in eastern Java it was 878.28 million barrels, Kalimantan 583.82 million barrels, and western Java 463.07 million barrels.
Furthermore, southern Sumatra reached 459.95 million barrels, Maluku reached 372.79 million barrels, Natuan 161.34 million barrels, Papua 109.45 million barrels, and Sulawesi 56.14 million barrels.Aceh also has oil reserves of 19.52 million barrels and North Sumatra 1.73 million barrels.
Meanwhile, the largest gas reserves are in Maluku, namely 15.78 TCF, Kalimantan 11.58 TCF, Papua 10.25 TCF, southern Sumatra 5.3 TCF, and Sulawesi 4.6 TCF.
Then, gas reserves in eastern Java are 3.6 TCF, Natuna 1.58 TCF, western Java 1.55 TCF, central Sumatra 799.9 million cubic feet, Aceh 424 million cubic feet, and North Sumatra 329.5 cubic feet.
