President of the United States (US)
Donald Trump
urged Republican senators to shift federal funds used to subsidize health insurance costs under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into direct payments to individual US citizens.
This proposal was put forward as a potential compromise amidst the deadlock that led to a government shutdown or

US.
“I recommend to Republican Senators that the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars currently being sent to money-grubbing Insurance Companies to save the terrible Health Care provided by ObamaCare, BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE SO THEY CAN BUY THEIR OWN MUCH BETTER HEALTH CARE, and still have money left over,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social social media on Saturday (8/11), as reported

“In other words, take it from the BIG, EVIL Insurance Companies, give it to the people, and end, per Dollar spent, the worst Health Care anywhere in the World, ObamaCare,” he added, without providing further details.
Trump’s comments came just hours before the US Senate was scheduled to reconvene at midday.Earlier, the Senate on Friday (7/11) rejected legislation that would have continued paying salaries for hundreds of thousands of federal workers during the longest government shutdown in US history.
Lawmakers remain at odds over how to reopen the government.Democrats want the funding bill to include health care subsidies that will expire for 24 million Americans at the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Republicans who support the Trump administration, insist Congress must first pass the funding bill without any conditions and allow the government to reopen before discussing other issues.

This longestĀ U.S. administration has left millions of federal workers without paychecks, frozen critical food aid, and disrupted airline travel, among other impacts.
Representatives from the White House, US Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Trump’s proposal.
However, at least two Republican lawmakers, U.S. Senators James Lankford of Oklahoma and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have publicly supported Trump’s idea.
Lankford said the ACA subsidiesĀ pump money to insurance companies, not to the people to help.He added that these subsidies only help certain groups, not the general population.
The ACA marketplace allows people to purchase policies directly from health insurance providers and primarily serves those who do not have coverage through employers or the government programs Medicare and Medicaid.
Trump has also previously proposed direct payments to US taxpayers in other areas, such as a COVID-19 relief package during his first term.
