“It is a happy day to witness hard work between ministries, institutions and even internationally for the repatriation of 4 individual Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutans. This is also happiness for the four of them,” he said in a written statement, Wednesday (24/12).
Raja Juli explained that during the repatriation the four orangutans were placed in special cages according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards and accompanied by a veterinarian.
He said that the illegal trade in the four orangutans was discovered by Thai authorities in January and May 2025. After that, he said, the government communicated to repatriate the four endangered animals.
“Personally, I feel sad, because the crime of buying and selling wild animals is still happening. Therefore, we need to work hard between institutions and ministries to be serious about guarding borders so that illegal trade occurs,” he said.
Raja Juli said that when they were captured by the Thai government, the four orangutans were estimated to be under one month old.During the legal process, he said, they were treated at the Khao Pratubchang Wildlife Rescue Center, Ratchaburi Province.
He explained that the four orangutans consisted of three Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) – two males and one female – and one female Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis).
Furthermore, the four orangutans will be entrusted to the care of the Sumatran Rescue Alliance (SRA) Rehabilitation Center, Besitang, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, to undergo a gradual rehabilitation process until they are ready to be released in accordance with the distribution of their respective natural habitats.
“This repatriation process is a necessity for the Ministry of Forestry to carry out an evaluation and ensure that we can protect the jungle as the orangutan’s home forest as well as possible. They really are not worth buying and selling and they deserve to stay in their home forest,” he concluded.
