“If East Java is successful, God willing, next year we will not import white sugar. Because more than 50 percent of the national sugar cane plantations are in East Java,” said Amran in his official statement.
The boss of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) explained that of the national target of 100 thousand ha, around 70 thousand ha are planned to be in East Java.Development is carried out through synergy across ministries and institutions, regional governments, BUMN, as well as support from law enforcement officials to ensure realization in the field.
“The results of today’s meeting are very encouraging. The initial need is around 35 thousand hectares, but the ready land reserves reach 68 thousand hectares. We will do this in stages from now until January-March next year,” he said.
Apart from expanding land, the Ministry of Agriculture is preparing support for production facilities. For East Java, the government will distribute agricultural tools and machinery (alsintan), including at least 100 tractor units with a value of hundreds of billions of rupiah to encourage increased sugar cane productivity at the farmer level.
According to Amran, if the sugar cane development target is realized, national sugar production is projected to increase from around 2.68 million tons currently to around 3 million tons next year.
“If this happens, we will not only stop importing white sugar, but also strengthen food sovereignty and improve the welfare of sugar cane farmers,” said Amran.
Meanwhile, East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa expressed the East Java Provincial Government’s support for this national target. He said East Java was ready to optimize land potential and strengthen cross-district/city coordination with BUMN and the Ministry of Agriculture.
“East Java is ready to accelerate the expansion and increase of sugar cane productivity. We will ensure land readiness, data support and collaboration of all stakeholders so that the national sugar self-sufficiency target can be achieved according to the Minister’s direction,” he said.
