The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of around 2 minutes 28 seconds.
“The eruption of Mount Semeru that occurred this morning was accompanied by a faint rumbling sound,” he said.
Based on official data, the highest mountain on the island of Java was recorded as experiencing an eruption at 01.39 WIB with an eruption height of 700 meters above the peak.
The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with thick intensity towards the northeast and the eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm for 118 seconds.
Sigit explained that currently Mount Semeru is at level III (alert) status, so the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) has provided a number of recommendations.
“The public should not carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 km from the peak (center of the eruption),” he said.
Beyond this distance, people are not permitted to carry out activities within 500 meters of the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because they have the potential to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 km from the peak.
The public is also prohibited from carrying out activities within a 5 km radius of the crater/top of Semeru Volcano because it is prone to the danger of throwing stones (flare).
Then residents need to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava avalanches and lahars along rivers/valleys that originate at the peak of Semeru Volcano, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar and Besuk Sat as well as the potential for lahars in small rivers which are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
