“Earlier in the meeting I decided that for the entire Jakarta area, whether held by the government or the private sector, we asked that there be no fireworks. We will issue a circular for this,” said DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung during a press conference at Jakarta City Hall, Monday (22/12).

Pramono said the prohibition covers activities in hotels, shopping centers and other crowded locations. The SE will be issued by the DKI Jakarta Regional Secretary (Sekda) in the near future.
“Later there will be a Regional Secretary’s SE. Of course, once the Regional Secretary’s SE is out, people will obey it. All activities that require permits, whether in hotels, malls or other events, we ask not to hold fireworks,” he said.
Pramono emphasized that this policy was taken as a form of concern for the disasters that occurred in a number of regions, especially in Sumatra. The DKI Provincial Government wants the New Year celebrations in Jakarta to be more solemn and full of empathy.
“This year we chose not to have fireworks. We want to welcome the new year with prayer together, because the disaster that occurred concerns all of us,” he said.
Even so, Pramono admitted that the DKI Provincial Government cannot completely prohibit people from personally lighting fireworks or firecrackers. However, he appealed to Jakarta residents to exercise restraint.
“Meanwhile, if there are individuals who set off fireworks, of course we cannot regulate that. However, all activities that require permits, whether held in hotels or in shopping centers and so on, we ask everyone not to hold fireworks,” said Pramono.
Pramono also confirmed that there would be no raids on fireworks traders ahead of the New Year.According to him, a persuasive approach is preferred so that the New Year atmosphere remains conducive.
“I’m not holding a raid. We’re welcoming the new year, don’t make people unhappy,” he said.
Previously, Pramono also wanted all parties in Jakarta to prioritize empathy for disaster victims in Aceh, West Sumatra and North Sumatra. He didn’t want a luxurious New Year’s celebration amidst the sadness caused by the disaster.
“The most important thing is, there should be no excessive festivities, let alone extravagant ones. I don’t want that,” said Pramono.
As a substitute for fireworks, the DKI Provincial Government has prepared a New Year celebration concept with interfaith joint prayers, musical performances, as well as video mapping and drone attractions at a number of points, including at the HI Roundabout which is the main location for the celebration.
“Without fireworks, the essence of welcoming the new year will not be reduced,” he said.
