“Our families [in Indonesia], are still patriarchal, right? If there are mothers who have received education about immunization, they open their minds. Only when asked whether they can get the vaccine, they answer ‘I’ll give my husband permission first’. That [immunization] is often interrupted there,” said the Director of Immunization at the Ministry of Health, Indri Yogaswari, in Jakarta, Friday (19/12), as reported.

According to Indri, there are also many fathers who do not allow their children to be immunized because they believe in conspiracy theories.For example, hoaxes say that immunization can trigger autism.
Religion and belief factors also contribute to the lack of immunization coverage this year.
Apart from that, there are also parents who think that the effectiveness of vaccines is still insufficient so that their children can still get sick.
“Indeed, it depends on the type of vaccine. Some are once in a lifetime, some need a booster before you can get a good level of immunity. That needs to be explained, because many people think it’s the same,” he said.
The following are some of the causes of low immunization coverage found by the Ministry of Health:
– the family or husband does not allow it (47 percent)
– fear of side effects (45 percent)
– sick child (23 percent)
– forgot or didn’t know the immunization schedule (23.4 percent)
– immunization is considered not important (22.8 percent)
– religious/belief issues (12 percent)
– no time (11.2 percent)
