The civil war in Sudan has now shifted to the Kordofan region from previously in Darfur. The deadliest attack reportedly occurred at a kindergarten and hospital in Kalogi, South Kordofan, where 89 people were killed, including 43 children.
Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were also killed when a drone hit their base in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, on December 13.
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned these “horrific drone strikes” and noted that attacks on peacekeepers can be considered “war crimes under international humanitarian law.”
The UN human rights (HAM) chief, Volker Turk, meanwhile also warned that targeting medical facilities violates international humanitarian law.
The fighting in Kordofan is a significant expansion of the Sudanese conflict after the RSF captured El Fasher in October, which was the Sudanese army’s last stronghold in Darfur.
Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health’s Humane Research Laboratory (HRL) found that RSF troops killed civilians who tried to flee the city and systematically destroyed evidence by burying, burning, and moving the victims’ bodies.
This escalation occurred at the same time as the resumption of international efforts to broker peace.
Head of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Abdel Fattah Al Burhan met with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) on December 15 and expressed readiness to cooperate with United States President Donald Trump in peace efforts.
Sudan has topped the International Rescue Committee’s Emergency Watch List for three consecutive years. The war, which began in April 2023, has killed more than 40,000 people and forced more than 14 million people to flee.
