Cambodia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that a Thai fighter jet had bombed “near a civilian refugee camp in Srei Snam district, Siem Reap province”.
Information Minister Neth Pheaktra also told
AFP
that this is the first time during the latest clashes that the Thai military has attacked the Siem Reap area.
The province is home to the Angkor temple complex and Cambodia’s main tourist destination, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat.
Neth Pheaktra said the Thai F-16 fighter jet penetrated more than 70 kilometers into Cambodian territory.
According to officials, renewed clashes between the two Southeast Asian countries this month have killed at least 28 people, including soldiers and civilians, and displaced around 800,000 people.
Each party also blamed the other for triggering the conflict, claiming self-defense and accusing each other of carrying out attacks on civilians.
Previously, dozens of people were killed in five days of fighting last July before a ceasefire was agreed, but then violated again within a matter of months.
This conflict is part of a long dispute that has its roots in the establishment of an 800 km long border between the two countries during the colonial era.
At the beginning of the year, United States President Donald Trump also intervened in the conflict and succeeded in helping Thailand-Cambodia agree to a ceasefire. However, war broke out again.
Last week, Trump also contacted the two countries and confirmed that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a ceasefire starting Saturday (13/12) evening.
However, clashes continued throughout the weekend until Monday (15/12), and Bangkok denied Trump’s claims about a ceasefire.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who dissolved parliament last week to pave the way for elections next year, wrote on Facebook on Sunday that his government would continue fighting.
Military officials on both sides said clashes and attacks along the border were still ongoing on Monday (15/12).
