According to Dalian Customs, the pendant triggered an alarm during a routine customs inspection.
The pendant that the traveler described as a “talisman” turned out to be a gift from a friend.

Surprisingly, the amulet showed radiation of 168.6 microsieverts (µSv) per hour.This figure is 1,686 times above the normal background radiation level.
By comparison, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) limit for public exposure to ionizing radiation is 1 millisievert (mSv) per year, beyond what a person receives from natural background radiation.
Further analysis identified the radioactive substance in the pendant as Thorium-232.Thorium-232 is a substance classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) under the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Group 1 carcinogen due to its ability to cause cancer in humans.
Dalian Customs has confiscated the goods and reminded travelers to verify the composition of goods purchased abroad to avoid health risks and financial losses.
Radioactive items that exceed safety standards will be confiscated and handed over to special agencies or returned to their place of origin.
