Amalia explained that the imported rice is mostly broken rice, which is used as industrial raw material.Apart from that, some imports are also premium rice and rice with certain characteristics needed by hotels, restaurants and catering/cafes, such as basmati and hom mali.
BPS noted that the type of rice most imported during January-October 2025 was broken rice, not for animal feed (HS 10064090).
“Imports of non-fodder broken rice (HS10064090) during January-October 2025 were 286.91 thousand tons, and these imports fell 26.97 percent compared to the same period the previous year,” said Amalia.
According to him, this type of rice is commonly used by industry to make several food ingredients such as vermicelli, rice flour and porridge.
Import volumes were also seen in basmati rice (HS 10063050) and hom mali rice (HS 10063040), amounting to 3.15 thousand tons and 600 tons respectively. These two types of rice are commonly used by horeka and this type of rice is not produced domestically
He admitted that there were indeed medium rice imports recorded in January amounting to 69.75 thousand tons. However, the imported rice is the remaining import quota from the previous year which will enter Indonesia in early 2025.
“The medium rice imports recorded in January amounted to 69.75 thousand tons, which was the quota for 2024 and the shipment arrived in January 2025,” he concluded.
Previously, BPS revealed that Indonesia would still import 40.7 thousand tons of rice as of October 2025.
BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Pudji Ismartini said the imports were worth US$19.1 million. If we assume an exchange rate of IDR 16,671 per US dollar, then imports will reach IDR 318 billion.
“In October 2025, rice imports will reach 40.7 thousand tons, with a value of US$19.1 million (Rp. 318 billion),” said Pudji in a press conference at the BPS office, Central Jakarta, Monday (1/12).
“During January 2025-October 2025, rice imports amounted to 364.3 thousand tons with a value of US$178.5 million (Rp. 2.9 trillion). And the main countries of origin for this rice import were, January 2025-October 2025, from Myanmar, Thailand and India,” he continued.
In a separate statement, Head of the Communications and Information Services Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture, Moch Arief Cahyono, emphasized that no medium rice imports were entering Indonesia.
The imported rice coming in this year is part of the special rice policy and industrial rice based on commodity balances. This policy ensures that only types of rice that are not produced domestically or needed as industrial raw materials can enter.
“What the public needs to understand is that there is not a single import of medium rice. Only special needs rice, certain premium rice and industrial rice will come in. It does not touch general public consumption,” stressed Arief in a written statement quoted
