Government
Japan
claimed a Chinese military aircraft aimed its radar system at its country’s fighter jet in the southeastern airspace of Okinawa on Saturday (6/12).
Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi criticized China’s move as a “dangerous act.”He said Japan had issued a “strong protest” and asked China to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
According to AFP, the Japanese Ministry of Defense explained that the first incident occurred in the sea area southeast of Okinawa Island.China’s J-15 fighter plane which took off from the Liaoning aircraft carrier several times directed its radar at Japanese F-15 jets which were deployed to monitor the movements of Chinese aircraft.

About two hours later, another J-15 fighter jet from Liaoning also periodically locked radars on other Japanese fighter jets. However, no damage or injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
“Radar locking in these incidents constitutes a dangerous action that goes beyond the limits necessary for the safe flight of the aircraft,” the ministry said.
“For an incident like this to occur is very regrettable,” he added.
Relations between the two countries are currently tense after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s statement alluded to the possibility that Japan would intervene if China attacked Taiwan.
Takaichi in Parliament last November said a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.
However, he said Japan’s stance on Taiwan had not changed since the joint Japan-China communiqué in 1972.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, then questioned Takaichi’s statement at a routine press conference on Thursday (4/12).
“Now that Takaichi claims the Japanese government’s basic position regarding Taiwan remains as written in the 1972 Sino-Japanese joint statement, can he explain precisely and completely what was stated in that joint statement?”asked Jian, as quoted by The Straits Times.
