Minister of the Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said two companies were being monitored for impact
floods in Sumatra
.The two companies with the initials AR and NSHE operate in the Batang Toru Watershed (DAS), North Sumatra.
According to Hanif, monitoring is carried out to see to what extent development activities and space use contribute to environmental pressure in the upstream watershed.
“Field inspections were carried out after aerial monitoring provided strong indications of changes in the landscape that affected water flow in the area,” he said in a written statement, Friday (5/12).

Hanif said the company’s development activities had proven to put additional pressure on the Batang Toru watershed, especially in situations of extreme rainfall.
“From aerial inspections, we identified at least three main sources that worsened the flooding: industrial forest plantation activities, massive hydroelectric (plant) construction and gold mining activities in the Batang Toru watershed,” said Hanif.
This initial identification, he continued, was carried out through a combination of aerial monitoring and direct ground checks at points suspected of increasing the load of water runoff.
On the other hand, he said, the upstream area is also dominated by agricultural land, both dry land and wet land, which also affects the soil’s ability to absorb rainwater.
Hanif emphasized that currently environmental restoration cannot be carried out partially but must be carried out comprehensively as one unit.
He said that the extreme rainfall patterns that have occurred must also become a new reference in planning and controlling space use.
“KLH/BPLH will review all environmental approvals that apply to the Batang Toru watershed,” he said.
