Floods of cold lava erupt
Mount Semeru
again hit two villages in Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency,
East Java
, Friday (5/12).Nine homes and one business premises were reportedly affected.
Head of the East Java BPBD Emergency and Logistics Division, Satriyo Nurseno, said it started when heavy rain occurred on the slopes of Semeru Friday (5/12) at around 10.55 WIB.

“Then the hot material used by APG (Hot Falling Clouds) which had settled along the route, was eroded by rain lava with a 30 mm amak across the Rejali watershed,” said Satriyo, Friday (5/12).
As a result, several residents’ houses in Sumberlangsep Hamlet, Jugosari Village;and Kajar Kosong, South Kebondeli Hamlet, Sumberwuluh Village, Candipuro District were affected.
In Sumberlangsep Hamlet, Jugosari Village, eight houses were recorded as affected, with one of them heavily damaged.One business building was also reported damaged.
“Nine heads of families (KK) or 26 people were affected,” he said.
In Kajar Kosong, South Kebondeli Hamlet, Sumberwuluh Village, a flood of cold lava also damaged one resident’s house.
“The main road access to Jugosari Village was cut off due to material deposits, but there is an alternative route with a longer distance,” he said.
Satriyo said that currently residents are evacuating independently to highland areas and several affected residents are temporarily taking refuge in food barn tents.However, some returned to their homes.
“Information from the Village Head is that the condition of the residents is currently still safe and logistics stocks are still sufficient for the next 2-3 days. There were no casualties in this incident,” he said.
BPBD Lumajang Regency coordinates with the Jugosari Village Government, Koramil, UPT.PSDA, volunteers and sub-district officials for further handling.
“The Lumajang Regency Social Service has distributed 147 basic necessities to Sumberwuluh Village,” he said.
“BPBD Lumajang Regency together with related departments will check the location tomorrow taking into account the weather and conditions in the field,” he concluded.
