the footage comes from cameras that have direct access to the internet and are installed in homes, businesses, health facilities, saunas and other spaces that generally monitor small children or pets.
These types of cameras are widely used in countries around the world with weak privacy security.
Hackers can also break into the device because the password used is very weak, for example a combination of repeated characters or consecutive numbers.
South Korea’s Science Ministry said Tuesday that the government is reviewing new rules that would see home CCTV cameras blocked unless users create a complex account name and password.
Hacking of personal data and CCTV cameras has long been a scourge for South Koreans.People, especially women in Ginseng Country, often become sexual subjects and targets of perpetrators who install hidden cameras, especially in public toilets, subway stations and hotel rooms.
The case is the latest in South Korea’s more than decade-long effort to combat illegal electronic eavesdropping practices that endanger many of citizens’ everyday devices.
Head of the Cyber Terror Investigation Unit, Kim Young-woon, said the suspects in this case were charged with violating anti-hacking regulations.
Three of them were detained and face additional charges for making or selling sexual video material, including involving children.Meanwhile, another suspect was released after being arrested.
Kim also said the number of victims was difficult to ascertain and the website the video was circulating on was also being investigated.Meanwhile, local authorities did not mention the brand of camera that was hacked.
For more than a decade, South Korea has faced a proliferation of hidden cameras for recording sexual videos, especially targeting young women.
Police recorded nearly 50,000 arrests from 2011 to 2022 related to creating sexual content from cameras.
According to police science professor at Sungshin Women’s University, Hakka Yong Kim, initial reports of sexual content being captured from security cameras emerged in 2017.
He emphasized that crimes like this are not new and their impact is expected to increase.
In the United States, similar cases have also occurred.Last year, California-based security camera company Verkada agreed to pay around US$3 million (around Rp. 50 billion) to settle a US Department of Justice lawsuit regarding 150,000 cameras hacked in 2021 at school and hospital locations.
Meanwhile, video from tens of thousands of cameras in China has also been bought and sold via social media, with Iran-backed groups attempting to spy on Israel via private security cameras.
So the Israeli authorities asked citizens to change their passwords and install software updates.
