Rage bait content is also said to be a sign of how netizens are easily provoked by emotions on social media as a result of content manipulation in order to create profits for the creators.
The choice of rage bait occurred after more than 30 thousand people gave their choices online during November 24-27 for three Word of the Year choices, namely “rage bait”, “aura farming” and “biohack”.
Oxford said that the use of the word “rage bait” had tripled in the last year compared to before.
“The fact that the word rage bait exists and is seeing such a dramatic increase in usage means we are increasingly aware of the manipulation tactics we can use online,” said Casper Grathwohl, President of Oxford Languages.
“It felt like a natural progression in the ongoing conversation about what it means to be human in a world driven by technology – and extreme online culture.”
