The incident began when a Chinese coast guard patrol boat expelled a Japanese fishing boat from the waters of the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, in the East China Sea, northeast of Taiwan and southwest of Japan.
Meanwhile, the Japanese Coast Guard said they had prevented and expelled two Chinese coast guard ships when they approached the fishing boat in the early hours of Tuesday (2/12), as quoted from

.
However, China and Japan gave different versions of the maritime confrontation involving their coast guards with Japanese fishing boats.
China’s Coast Guard said Japanese fishing boats entered the waters of the Senkaku Islands illegally and the statement also stressed the islands were Chinese territory.
The incident follows diplomatic tensions between China and Japan that have escalated since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi informed parliament on November 7.
Takaichi stated that China’s attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.
He said at that time that China’s use of military force against Taiwan could “give rise to a situation that threatens Japan’s survival.”
According to Takaichi, the Taiwan conflict could pose a threat to Japan, considering that the two regions are only 110 kilometers apart.
China believes that Takaichi’s statement could damage relations between China and Japan, as well as trigger anger and strong criticism from the Chinese people.
However, Takaichi was reluctant to withdraw this statement, so tensions increased, with Japan prohibiting its citizens from going to China, and vice versa.
China also warned Chinese citizens in Japan to be careful and avoid large crowds.
