James Cameron
feels that the development of artificial intelligence or AI technology which is now capable of producing virtual actors is “terrifying”.
In a recent interview with Sunday Morning on CBS, the situation of AI being able to produce computerized actors cannot be compared to using computer graphics to replace actors, as he did in Avatar (2009).

“For years, there was this notion that, ‘Oh, they did something weird with the computer and they changed actors,’ when in fact, once you really dig in and see what we did, it was a celebration of the actor-director moment,” Cameron said.
“Now, let’s move to the other end of the spectrum, and you have generative AI, where they can create a character,” he added as reported
Variety
on Sunday (30/11).
“They [AI] can create actors. They can create performances from scratch with just text commands. It’s like, no. That’s terrifying to me. That’s the opposite. That’s what we don’t do.”
This is not the first time James Cameron has expressed his negative views on AI.In July 2023, he stated that excessive use of AI is dangerous.
“I’m really concerned. I think the use of AI as a weapon is the biggest danger,” Cameron said at the time.
“Just imagine artificial intelligence on a battlefield, the entire battle is only carried out by computers at a speed that humans can no longer intervene in, and you have no ability to reduce the situation,” he continued.
Cameron also admitted that he did not believe that current AI technology could replace the humanist side of writers, especially in creating an optimal manuscript.
“I personally don’t believe in disembodied minds that simply repeat what other minds have said about the life they lead, about love, about lies, about fear, about death – then combine them into one word and repeat it again.”

“I don’t believe that it will be able to move the audience,” he said.
Until now, Cameron admitted that he was not at all interested in AI assistance in writing his screenplay unless AI could have a big say in the film industry.
“Let’s wait another 20 years, and if one day AI wins the Oscar for Best Screenplay, I think we should take them seriously,” he said about the opportunity to use AI in making screenplays for his films.
