“Of the 81 national road sections that were affected, around 72 sections or almost 90 percent have returned to function. The other nine sections are still in the process of being accelerated and continue to be worked on without stopping,” said Pratikno in a press conference, Thursday (25/12).
Pratikno said that handling was accelerated so that the flow of logistics, emergency services and community mobility could quickly return to normal.Recovery efforts involve cross-ministries/institutions, including local governments and officials in the field.
On the same occasion, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported progress on opening access at a number of points that were previously cut off.Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said that road access from Bener Meriah to Bireuen is now starting to open via several alternative routes.
“A number of alternative roads can be used by two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. The Takengon-Bireuen national section is also starting to function and will facilitate logistics distribution, especially energy from Rembele Airport,” said Abdul.
Apart from roads, restoration is also focused on national bridges affected by floods and landslides.BNPB together with the Ministry of Public Works (PU), TNI, Polri and BNPBD accelerated the installation of emergency Bailey bridges in several strategic locations.
“Work on the Bailey bridge in Lawe Penanggalan, Southeast Aceh, and in Wih Ni Pase, Bener Meriah, continues. The general target is to be completed by December 30, although there are several points that are expected to be completed in early January,” he said.
Restoring transportation access is considered crucial because it will speed up handling of other sectors, starting from logistics distribution, improving electricity and communications, to smooth energy supply.
Abdul also reported that the number of fatalities due to flooding in Sumatra had increased again. As of Thursday (25/12), the total death toll in the three affected provinces reached 1,135 people, while 173 people were still declared missing and the search process was continuing.
He said that the increase in fatalities was the result of search and rescue operations that were continuing to be carried out in the field.
“As of today, there has been an increase in the number of fatalities by six people, bringing the total from yesterday to 1,129 to 1,135. There has been a reduction in missing victims on the search list which is still ongoing,” said Abdul.
