Two matels were attacked by a number of people after stopping a motorbike rider on Jalan Kalibata on Thursday afternoon.
“The number of objects burned was 9 kiosks, 6 two-wheeled vehicles, 1 four-wheeled vehicle,” said Head of the South Jakarta Gulkarmat District Head Asril Rizal when contacted, Friday (12/12).

Asril said officers came to the location to extinguish the fire on Thursday night, at around 23.48 WIB.The blackout finished early Friday morning, around 01.02 WIB.
“The suspected cause of the arson was using gasoline,” he said.
Pancoran Police Chief Commissioner Mansur said the incident started when the two motorbike riders stopped a motorbike rider at the scene.
“The chronology is that there was one of the motorbike users. Well, the motorbike was suddenly stopped by these friends. After it was stopped, it stopped, as usual. Well, it just stopped, this is according to witness testimony, then it continued to stop, the other road users got out of the car,” said Mansur.
Mansur said the beatings were carried out by people in the car.He said the beating took place quickly.
“Suddenly a car driver came on the road too. The car driver didn’t know where he came from, suddenly got out to help. Then the matel hit him,” he said.
After the beating incident, a few moments later a number of tents belonging to street vendors (PKL) and motorbikes around the location were burned by a number of people, suspected to be colleagues of the two Eagle Eyes who were beaten up.The incident was recorded on video and went viral on social media.
The Pancoran Police Chief suspects that the arson was a counterattack for the beating that killed two Eagle Eyes.
“Perhaps there is a feeling of disapproval. The impact on the neighborhood here is that they don’t know anything because it happened on the street and according to witnesses it was just spontaneous, I don’t know where it came from, it’s still under investigation,” he told reporters, Thursday night.
“It’s hard to count the stalls, some of them are already closed, because if you look at the fire points, there are approximately six fires, but we can put them out, it just so happens that the owner is still around here,” said Mansur regarding the acts of vandalism and arson which were allegedly carried out by colleagues of the two eagle eyes who were victims of the beating.
Separately, South Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Nicolas Ary Lilipaly said that the destruction and burning of street vendors’ tents and motorbikes was the aftermath of the beating that killed Matel.
“As a result of this, the victim’s friends, approximately 80 to 100 people, suddenly came, actually we from the police had anticipated this, but at that time the force that suddenly arrived, approximately 100 people, damaged the stalls around this place,” he said.
To restore security and order, as well as reduce the tense situation, the South Jakarta Police, Polda Metro Jaya, dispatched Brimob members to the location last Thursday night.
