Deputy Head of the Israeli Ministry of Defense’s Rehabilitation Department, Tamar Shimoni, told Army Radio this had never happened before.
“[This] has never happened,” said Shimoni, as quoted by Anadolu Agency.
According to Shimoni, a third of Israeli soldiers experienced psychological problems related to the events of October 7, 2023.
Post-traumatic stress disorder
What the Israeli soldiers experienced is known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). In psychology, this is a serious mental health condition that arises after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event such as war, characterized by symptoms such as flashbacks and nightmares.
This mental disorder entered the discussion of psychology in the 1980s after a number of experts studied soldiers involved in World Wars I and II and the Vietnam War.

wrote, “At that time PTSD was conceptualized as resulting from a catastrophic stressor beyond the scope of ordinary human experience. This appeared to apply not only to war, but also to events such as torture, rape, and natural disasters.”
This mental disorder is caused by an action that is considered to violate morals.
“We also now know that for some people, moral injury can result from doing things like killing for questionable purposes, and that can contribute to the development of PTSD,” the page says.
The same thing happened to United States soldiers who fought in Vietnam.
“Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a general term given to describe an illness that affects some people who served in Vietnam and survived. Post-traumatic stress disorder is severe anxiety caused by external stress beyond normal and tolerable experiences,” said the psychiatry times website.
PTSD was originally called “DaCostas Syndrome,” after the doctor who publicized the disturbing symptoms he saw in soldiers on both sides of the war. They experience shortness of breath, rapid pulse, and fatigue when stressed, especially when recalling certain aspects of the battle.
Bullet shock, combat exhaustion, and post-Vietnam syndrome were the terms given to the symptoms of PTSD before it was officially added to the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) as an anxiety disorder in 1980. Since then, PTSD has been changed to a disorder related to trauma and stressors.
