4 Former State Leaders Sentenced to Death, Some with the First Lady

Hasina was accused of committing crimes against humanity.The United Nations (UN) reported that as many as 1,400 people died from July-August 2024 in the crackdown.

The incident occurred when Hasina was defending her position.From this death rate, the trial determined this as the main aspect.
Hasina is not the first leader in the world to be sentenced to death by her country’s court.
There were four other leaders who had preceded him.
1. Saddam Hussein (Iraq)
The Iraqi leader for the period 1979-2003 was famous for his style of always opposing the United States.However, when his regime fell through the US military invasion, the president’s fate was over.Saddam Hussein was captured and imprisoned in December 2003. Three years later he was convicted of crimes against humanity related to the Dujail massacre and sentenced to death.He was executed by hanging in December 2006.
2. Moussa Traore
The first president of Mali who previously worked as a soldier and politician.However, when leading Mali, the leader was known to act dictatorially.The Malian people and the military succeeded in overthrowing his rule in 1991. Moussa was sentenced to death.However, his sentence was commuted and Traore was released in 2002.
He died at the age of 83 in September 2020. France24 reported that at his funeral, many members of the military junta that was in power at that time were present and paid their respects.

3. Muhammad Najibullah
Muhammad Najibullah is the President of Afghanistan who is also an ally of the Soviet Union.He served from 1986 to 1992. Before becoming president, Muhammad Najbullah was also known to have served as head of the secret police service.
Najibullah is known as a president who lives in wealth and is fond of corruption.When the Taliban group became stronger and succeeded in ousting him from power, he was forced to step down from his post as president.
Najibullah then fled and hid in a UN office.But in 1996 when Kabul fell to the Taliban, he was executed by torture and shooting.
4. Nicolae Ceausescu
Nicolas Ceausescu, the president of Romania, strongly adhered to communist ideology in running the government.He is known to adhere to communist orthodoxy which implements centralized administration within the country.

But he himself and his family lived in luxury.In an effort to pay off the large foreign debt his government had accumulated through mismanaged industrial ventures in the 1970s, Ceaușescu in 1982 ordered the export of most of the country’s agricultural and industrial production.
Extreme shortages of food, fuel, energy, medicine, and other basic necessities resulted in a drastic decline in living standards and increased unrest.Ceaușescu also implemented extensive policies.
Personality cult and elevated his wife, Elena, and many members of his extended family to high positions in the government and party.Among his grandiose and impractical plans was leveling thousands of villages in Romania and moving their inhabitants to so-called agrotechnical centers.
The people who were fed up then overthrew him through revolution.On 17 December 1989 Demonstrations spread to the capital Bucharest, and on 22 December Romanian soldiers defected to the side of the demonstrators.
That same day, Ceaușescu and his wife fled the capital by helicopter, but were captured and detained by armed forces.
Through a speedy trial, on December 25, the pair were immediately tried and convicted by a special military court in Târgovişte on charges of mass murder and other crimes.
Ceaușescu and his wife were immediately shot by firing squad.They were later buried in Bucharest.
