The following are a number of world criminal cases that were solved through forensic DNA testing by taking saliva and sperm samples.
1. Murder of Anna Jean Kane
The murder case of Anna Jean Kane, which occurred on October 2 1988, remained mysterious for the next 35 years.
This makes it the longest unsolved case in Pennsylvania, United States. This brutal crime occurred on the side of the road in Perry Township.
After two years of deadlock, in February 1990, an anonymous letter, signed by a “concerned citizen”, addressed to the local newspaper contained “many intimate details” about the murder.
State Trooper Daniel Womer believes the letter writer may be responsible for the murder. The first thing to check was the saliva-covered envelope in which the letter was sent.
There it was proven positive that his DNA matched the DNA found on Kane’s clothing, indicating Scott Grim as a possible suspect.
Advanced DNA genetic genealogy technology ultimately identified Scott Grim as the killer.Pennsylvania State Police and Berks County District Attorney John Adams broke the news in August 2022.
Unfortunately, Grim died in 2018 of natural causes and was unable to stand trial to testify. He was only 26 years old when Kane’s murder occurred.
2. The Fawn Cox case
The unsolved murder of Fawn Cox has been a source of deep sorrow and immense frustration for Kansas City Missouri Police Department detectives for the past three decades.
The case occurred on June 26, 1989, when someone broke through her bedroom window and sexually assaulted her before brutally killing her while her entire family was still sleeping.
Fortunately, crime scene investigators collected bodily fluids from a potential suspect at that time, although forensic technology at the time did not allow them to identify the perpetrator.
Using genealogy DNA results, they were able to identify Donald Cox, Jr., Fawn’s cousin as the perpetrator who was announced in 2020. However, Donald Cox died in 2006.
To prove it, the police had to work hard with the extraction and comparison of existing DNA profiles from the original crime scene 14 years earlier, and it was proven that there was a match.
When investigators shared these findings with Fawn’s family in November 2020, her surviving parents expressed both sadness and relief that their suspicions may have been confirmed all along.
3. Murder and Sexual Assault of Jodi Loomis
It happened on August 23, 1972, when Jody Loomis’ body was found lying on the street with a gunshot wound above his right ear.Only DNA evidence was found on his body and boots.
47 years later, the family could breathe a sigh of relief when the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department in 2019 identified a suspect.
How could that be?Police matched the semen found on the victim’s boots. The evidence linked him to 78-year-old Terrence Miller, who lived just 17 minutes from the crime scene of Jody’s murder.
This forced officers to arrest and charge Miller with first degree murder.Using DNA evidence, authorities were able to match Miller’s genetic profile to semen collected from Jody’s boots.
Unfortunately, Miller committed suicide just hours before he was found guilty by a jury.
