has identified 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his son 24-year-old Naveed Akram as suspects.
However, New South Wales police refused to comment on the shooting suspect.
1. Studied at Al Murad Institute Sydney
Meanwhile, a mosque imam at Sydney’s Al Murad Institute, Sheikh Adam Ismail, said he recognized Naveed Akram from the video of the shooting circulating in the media.Through a video, Ismail clarified that he hit Naveed Akram because he had taught him the Koran.
Ismail said Akram came to his institute to take lessons in 2019, looking for classes in reading the Koran and Arabic, and continued studying for a year.
Ismail made the video after a photo of Ismail with Akram appeared on social media shortly after the shooting occurred. However, Ismail emphasized that he strongly condemned what his former student had done.
“I condemn this act of violence without hesitation,” Ismail was quoted as saying in a video message

.
“What I find very ironic is that the Koran he studied clearly says that taking the life of an innocent person is the same as killing all humanity. This shows that what happened yesterday in (Bondi) is completely prohibited in Islam,” he added.
Ismail also explained that there are many people who have studied the Koran but cannot really carry out its teachings which always direct the people to goodness.
“Not everyone who reads the Koran understands or practices its teachings, and unfortunately, this appears to be the case here,” he said.
2. Akram’s identity
Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, on Monday (15/12), said Naveed Akram was born in Australia, while his father, who died in the shootout, was an immigrant who had lived in Australia since 1998.

, police then carried out raids at the pair’s residences, including a short-term rental address in the southwestern suburb of Campsie, where they lived before the attack took place.
Two firearms and several suitcases were recovered from the property by police on Monday (15/12) afternoon.
According to the police, Akram has held a firearms ownership permit since 2015 or around 10 years.
“The father has held a firearms license since 2015. We are investigating the background of the two people,” said New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon.
“He meets the eligibility criteria for a firearms permit” and holds a “recreational hunting permit,” he added.
Currently, Naveed Akram is hospitalized and will likely face criminal charges related to the shooting.
3. The alleged perpetrator’s motive is related to ISIS
Police are still investigating the motive of this father and son carrying out the mass shooting.
However,
ABC
reported the Australian Domestic Intelligence Agency (ASIO) investigated Akram, six years ago after allegedly having strong links to the Sydney branch of the terrorist cell of the ISIS group.
ABC
learned that investigators from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) believed that the perpetrators of the shooting had sworn allegiance to the ISIS terrorist group.
One JCTT official, who did not want to be identified, told the ABC that an ISIS flag was found in the car of the two perpetrators at Bondi Beach.
The official revealed that ASIO also suspected Naveed Akram six years ago after police succeeded in thwarting an ISIS terrorist attack plan.
