The following are three giant Chinese dams that make the world wary.
1. Jinping-I Dam

, Jinping-I dam is the highest double arch dam in the world built in the Jinping Bend of the Yalong River, Sichuan Province.
Jinping-I Dam is recorded as the highest man-made dam in the world, reaching a maximum height of 305 meters (1,000 ft), 5 meters (16 ft) higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
This project started in 2005, and was put into operation in 2013 as part of China’s West-East Power Transfer program to supply energy to the densely populated eastern region.
The power plant has six units with a total capacity of 3,600 megawatts and is capable of producing more than 16 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
Although hailed as a major technological achievement, the construction sparked environmental concerns, including the relocation of around 7,000 residents and hundreds of small earthquakes linked to the filling of the reservoir.

2. Three Gorges Dam
The Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest hydroelectric power project built on the Yangtze River, Hubei Province, China.
The project, which began in 1994, was designed to generate electricity, control floods and become a symbol of national technological progress at a cost of around 200 billion yuan (around Rp. 440 trillion) and displace more than one million residents, as quoted from

The dam, completed in 2006, is 181 meters high and 2,335 meters long on the Yangtze River just before a deep and narrow valley turns into a plain.
However, the dam’s effectiveness in preventing flooding is often questioned, especially after extreme rainfall in nearly 60 years caused the Yangtze River to overflow.
The disaster killed or left 158 people missing, forced 3.67 million residents to flee, and 54.8 million people were affected.This also caused economic losses of around 144 billion yuan (around IDR 250 trillion)
3. Yarlung Tsangpo Dam
China built a giant dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River in the Tibet region which is one of the largest infrastructures in the world.
The project includes five hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 60 gigawatts on the Brahmaputra river, located further downstream in India, and the Jamuna River in Bangladesh.
The project will be built 30 km long along the vast border between China and India, and is expected to cost around 1.2 trillion yuan (around Rp. 2,832 trillion).
However, the Tibetan government criticized this project as having the potential to damage the environment and threaten millions of people.Similar concerns were also expressed by India and Bangladesh.
India fears the Brahmaputra river is a water bomb with sudden releases of water that risk triggering major floods in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Bangladesh is also worried because only seven percent of the Brahmaputra watershed area.Meghna, Ganga is in her country.
Meanwhile, China’s dams also have the potential to hold back sediment that has been fertilizing deltas, threaten food security, and accelerate surface decline in areas such as the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
