Quoted by AFP, the uncle of the two children said the victims were two brothers aged eight and ten years. They leave the house in the morning to look for firewood.
The deadly attack took place around an area known as the Yellow Line, a boundary marked by yellow concrete blocks within the Gaza Strip.
Under a United States-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Israeli forces withdrew to positions behind the lines.
Even though the ceasefire came into effect on October 10, deadly incidents involving Israeli troop fire often occur in areas near the Yellow Line.
A spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense agency which is under Hamas authority, Mahmud Bassal, said that the two brothers were killed as a result of an Israeli drone strike in Bani Suheila, east of Khan Yunis, at around 08.30 am local time (06.30 GMT).
Bassal identified the two victims as Fadi and Jumaa Tamer Abu Assi.
“They were innocent children, who had no rockets or bombs. They were only eight and 10 years old,” said Alaa Abu Assi, the victim’s uncle.
“They were just collecting firewood,” he added.
Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis confirmed receiving the bodies of the two children, which the family buried later in the afternoon.
In its official statement, the Israeli military said the soldiers identified two suspects who crossed the Yellow Line, carried out suspicious activities on the ground, and approached IDF troops operating in southern Gaza, posing an immediate threat.
“After identification, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) neutralized the suspects to eliminate the threat,” the Israeli military said.
