Abdul said the flash flood that occurred in Brebes was caused by the river overflowing which hit three sub-districts, namely Sirampog, Bumiayu and Bantarkawung.
He explained that from the temporary rapid assessment data, 8 housing units and one educational facility were affected by the flood.
Apart from that, the Bantarwaru Bridge which connects the villages of Bangbayar-Bantarwaru-Pengarasan was also cut off.
Abdul added that the rain and strong winds also caused damage to residents’ houses in Dawuhan Village, Sirampog.
He said that at least two residents’ houses were heavily damaged and ten other houses were slightly damaged due to the wind.
“Apart from the victim who died, six residents had to take refuge in neighboring houses,” he said.
The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Brebes Regency has carried out assessments in the field and evacuated affected residents.
Sirampog District is located in a steep hilly area with altitudes varying between 875 – 1,000 meters above sea level. This area is reportedly prone to ground movements triggered by weather factors.Based on BNPB disaster data, in mid-April 2025, a ground movement phenomenon occurred in Mendala Village, Sirampog District, which damaged 114 houses.
BNPB together with BPBD Brebes Regency have relocated residents by providing permanent housing in safer areas.
Residents of Sirampog District and the local government are advised to continue to anticipate other potential hydrometeorological disasters.
The Bumiayu District area is also reported to have a high disaster risk. This small town is surrounded by mountains and hills with an average height of 690 meters above sea level. The topography consists of steep hillsides, hollow valleys and several large rivers that are at risk of suddenly overflowing if heavy rain occurs in the upstream areas.
Monitoring hilly areas, planting vegetation to strengthen soil structure and improving river upstream areas are expected to be carried out regularly. The formation and strengthening of Disaster Resilient Villages (Destana) is also expected to be at the forefront of efforts to minimize the impact of disaster risks.
