“1,428.73 tons of dead fish of the tilapia type in Lake Maninjau floating net cages were ready for harvest,” said Head of the Agam Food Security and Fisheries Service Rosva Deswira in Lubuk Basung, Agam, Saturday.
He said 1,428.73 tonnes of fish deaths were spread across Nagari or Sungai Batang Village, Tanjung Sani, Duo Koto, Maninjau and Koto Gadang Anan Koto.
As a result, dozens of floating net cage farmers suffered losses of up to IDR 32.86 billion, because the price of fish at the farm level was IDR 25 thousand per kilogram.
“Farmers have suffered quite large losses and this is the highest number of fish deaths since the last three years,” he said.
He added that the fish deaths were the result of a hydrometeorological disaster which resulted in quite high rainfall accompanied by strong winds hitting the area.
Under these conditions, upwelling or water reversal occurs from the bottom to the surface, so that there is less air on the surface of the volcanic lake. This condition causes the fish in floating net cages to lack oxygen and eventually die.
“The fish are dizzy and die. Floating net cage farmers cannot save their fish,” he said.
The Agam Food Security and Fisheries Service has submitted letters of advice, circulars, outreach on the prevention and control of fish deaths in floating net cages which have an impact on the lake’s aquatic environment.
This is in order to minimize fish deaths so that farmers do not experience losses.
