Natural disasters have struck again
Malawi
, a country in the Southeast African region.Authorities report that lightning has killed 14 people in the past two weeks.
In addition, around 8,000 people’s houses were destroyed as heavy rains continued to pound the country.
Commissioner of Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), Wilson Moleni, told journalists in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, on Friday (12/12) that deaths and damage were reported in various parts of the country.

“However, because the country is still hit by heavy rain, there is a possibility that the death toll will increase as time goes by,” said Moleni, as reported

He added that his organization was working “tirelessly” to provide humanitarian support to those displaced by the rains across the country.
“We are just appealing to the entire nation to take precautionary measures as the country continues to experience rain, so that this can prevent further loss of life,” he said.
Malawi has a bad history with natural disasters.Last year, during the same time period, at least eight people died, and 10,000 households were left homeless due to heavy rains.
In 2023, Cyclone Freddy killed thousands of people in the country’s southern region and displaced millions more.The country has not fully recovered from the economic devastation caused by the cyclone.
Over the past two years, Malawi has also experienced severe food shortages.Last month, Malawian President Arthur Peter Mutharika declared a state of national disaster in all 26 districts of the country and appealed for urgent humanitarian support.
According to DoDMA, there remains a “large deficit in funding” in Malawi to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
