They also warned that Israel’s actions could damage broader peace efforts.
“We reiterate our clear rejection of all forms of annexation and expansion of settlement policies,” said a joint statement from dozens of countries on Wednesday (24/11), quoted by AFP.
Not only that, these 14 countries also stated that Israel’s unilateral actions “violate international law” and have the potential to destabilize the situation at a sensitive time.
Currently, mediators including the United States are working to progress the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire.
This European country plus Japan also urged Israel to cancel plans to further annex the West Bank.
“(We urge Israel) to reverse this decision, as well as the expansion of settlements,” the statement said.
Furthermore, they said that continued settlement activity could worsen tensions on the ground.
In addition to putting pressure on Israel, the 14 countries’ statement also reaffirmed their firm commitment to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on a two-state solution.
The two-state solution is a framework for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict agreed upon by the international community. This framework contains the establishment of two countries that are side by side, safe, comfortable, respect each other and recognize each other’s sovereignty.
The statement came after right-wing politician and Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich discussed the new annexation plan.
He announced authorities had approved the construction of the settlements, and said the move was aimed at preventing the creation of a Palestinian state.
Back again about the West Bank.Israel has occupied this territory since the 1967 Middle East war.
Earlier this month, the United Nations said Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank had reached its highest level since at least 2017, sparking international concern about the situation on the ground.
